Note: Find a video tutorial about using Cruise Mode here. The Cruise Mode in TRAKTOR PRO 2 allows you to automatically play back all tracks contained in the currently selected Playlist. This is a useful feature for situations where you may need to leave your computer or want TRAKTOR to automatically play through a prepared playlist.

This is rather a special instalment of our series on using the bright new Stems file format from Native Instruments in your DJing, because it concerns a feature that has only just been launched, at the time of writing, at least (February 2016): Onscreen stem waveform display in Traktor.

This is a big deal, because alongside this much-needed addition to Traktor itself, Native Instruments has wisely made Stems plug-and-play with the Traktor Kontrol S4, of which there must be hundreds of thousands of units out there.

Not only that, but as it’s now possible to see what’s going on with Stems without the need for an onboard screen (as on the Kontrol D2, Kontrol S5 and Kontrol S8), anyone can map anything they like to Stems and enjoy all the feature of the format. And of course, you can dabble just with your mouse, too.

Take a look at the video below where I talk you through how it all works.

About the series

In the last tutorial, we looked at using Stems in a DVS set-up. In the second tutorial, we looking at isolating vocals in Stems tracks for creative mixing. And in the first tutorial, we considered the topic of finding great Stems files to play with. Keep an eye out for further videos…

  • How do I get music into it? – Any music you have on your iPhone’s Music app (ie synced from iTunes on your laptop/main computer, or bought on iTunes on your phone) should be usable in Traktor DJ.
  • Should I use Traktor DJ on the iPhone or the iPad? – Well, if you got it when it was in its “free” period, you probably grabbed both anyway, so the answer is: Use the one you’ve got with you!
  • Why are my tunes speeded up or slowed down? And why don’t they start when I press play, instead starting a few moments later sometimes? – Traktor DJ is optimised for playing electronic music, and it assumed the music you’re playing is going to be roughly the same tempo.
  • How can I decide what to play next? – Of course, this is what DJing is all about, but when you’re propping your iPad on your knee at a BBQ with a load of friends, just using it to provide some background music, you don’t really want to find yourself spending all your time leafing through your tunes collection wondering what a good next fit is.
